ECF conferences are known for the unusual spirit of open debate and exchange between scientists and stakeholders. In this spirit, we will look at the tasks of risk governance in the Mediterranean region. We will start from climate risks and climate policies, while acknowledging that these cannot be dealt with in isolation.

GSDP workshop as a Satellite Meeting at ECCS’11 Vienna—European Conference on Complex Systems

Social energy: a useful notion for analysing complex socio-ecological systems?

The metaphor social energy, based on an analogy to energy in physics, is supposed to facilitate the study of complex socio-ecological systems. It has been, to some extent, discussed in the GSDP network.

A half-day workshop to further the discussion around social energy will be scheduled during the European Conference on Complex Systems ECCS’11 in Vienna between September 12 and 16, 2011.

Funding Research for ICT solutions for governance and policy modelling

06.12.2010, Workshop in collaboration with the 7th Framework Programme of the European Union (FP7).

Within the 7th EU Framework Program, the EU has issued a call for the development of ICT solutions for governance and policy modelling. This call has an indicative budget of 25 million Euros; the deadline for handing in proposals is 18 January 2011.

In our workshop, EU officials and experienced researchers will inform about both this call and its opportunities for research funding. The target audience are representatives from research organisations, ICT business, state agencies, and civil society. Read more

ECF-TG set up research lines on sustainable transport for Bergen at the European Mobility Week 2010

The ECF-Transport Group met with occasion of the European Mobility Week 2010 in Bergen. The goal of the meeting was to set up a work plan to go ahead with the transport strategy agreed last June at the Bybanen Conference. The ECF-TG met at the City Council representatives of the Bergen mobility sector, among other groups of interest.

Bergen’s Bybanen works!

Bergen’s first light rail system was inaugurated on June 22nd by Queen Sonja of Norway, following a two-day conference with over 80 representatives from the private and public sector. The ECF-Transport Group, represented by the environmental researcher Aida Abdulah, talked about the challenges of sustainable mobility for Bergen and introduced the ECF-TG new project on stakeholder dialogs on transport.

The 2010 Summer Institute for Advanced Study of Disaster and Risk (SI2010) at
Beijing Normal University is the second of a series of three summer institutes cosponsored by the Ministry of Education, the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. Initiated in collaboration with the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP) – Integrated Risk Governance (IRG Project), this summer institute series is an integral part and a core capacity building activity of the Hazard and Risk Science Base at Beijing Normal University (the HRSB@BNU). The primary goal is to attract and train young scholars who have both background and strong interest in the field of hazard and risk study, and through which, to improve and strengthen education, research, as well as international communication and cooperation capacity in China in the field of disaster and risk sciences. In the long-term, the summer institutes seek contribution to laying a solid foundation of a state-of-the-art hazard and risk science base in China. Read more
